Article : THE ROLE OF ASSESSMENT IN THE CURRICULUM OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES (A LITERATURE REVIEW)

Abstract : Assessment is absolutely a necessary component in the curriculum of foreign languages. One of the main considerations, in every educational system, of administrators, teachers, and students alike are the outcomes of learning, what ability students can demonstrate because of increase in their knowledge and changes in understanding because of experiences in school. Assessment affects the quality of learning in foreign languages and not only, so students need to acquire knowledge and competencies that can be transferable in the work place. Much of current teaching and assessment in our foreign language classes seem to induce reproductive form of learning. Most of the time teachers emphasize on factual knowledge, bind students too firmly within currently acceptable theoretical framework (asking grammar by memory), and do the same while assessing learning. On the contrary, skills such as problem solving, communication, and working effectively with others are highly demanded in the workplace today. Teachers are being suggested in trainings provided by the ministry of Education and Sport that should be more effective how learning activities are structured and how assessment is done. Performance assessment, portfolios, authentic assessment and student self and peer assessment together with feedback and comments have been advocated as procedures that align assessment with current theories of learning and teaching. For instance, teachers of foreign languages are responsible for providing feedback in order that student re-learns and refines learning goals. This paper reviews roles of assessment has in the foreign languages curriculum, the importance of continuous assessment to raise a higher degree of student learning, and the roles of feedback to raise students
