Article : INFLUENCE OF SELECTED PSYCHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS ON MATHEMATICAL ACHIEVEMENT OF HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS DIFFERING IN PLACE OF RESIDENCE

Abstract : The present descriptive investigation is carried out to know the influence of certain selected psychological characteristics on the Achievement of Mathematics of higher secondary students based on their locality. Nine hundred twelfth standard students had been randomly selected for the present study. Attitude towards Mathematics Scale, Achievement Motivation Scale and Academic Self-confidence Scale have been used in this study. The descriptive analysis reveals that the students residing in municipality area have high level of Achievement in Mathematics, whereas the students of village panchayat and town panchayat have moderate level of Achievement in Mathematics. The differential analysis indicates that the students residing in municipality area significantly differing in their Achievement in Mathematics as compared to the students of village panchayat and town panchayat area. The correlation analysis shows that Attitude towards Mathematics as the significant correlate of Achievement in Mathematics of village panchayat area students; Achievement Motivation, and Attitude towards Mathematics as the significantly correlates of Achievement in Mathematics of town panchayat area students; Attitude towards Mathematics, and Academic Self-confidence indicates as the correlates of Achievement in Mathematics of students residing in municipality area. Further, Attitude towards Mathematics has emerged as the prime significant predictive factor of Achievement in Mathematics of students residing in village panchayat, town panchayat and municipality area. Academic Self-confidence also emerged as a significant predictive factor of Achievement in Mathematics with regard to the students of municipality area.
