Article : EVALUATION OF WOMEN TEACHERS EDUCATORS WITH REFERENCE TO PSYCHO-SOCIAL AND MENTAL HEALTH FACTORS AT MIDLIFE

Abstract : The objective of this study is to assess women teacher educators as victims of psychosocial stress, work-family conflict and anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms and social dysfunction at midlife. 50 women teacher educators, categorized from age level 40-50 years were selected as the sample using random sampling method. The sample were selected randomly from 12 Teacher Training Institutions affiliated to M.G.University of Kottayam and Ernakulam district. An interview schedule and two questionnaires namely General Health Questionnaire and Psycho Social Stress Scale were administered simultaneously. The Extraneous variables identified and controlled were age, working environment and socio-economic background. The results showed that the psycho social stress scores on women teacher educators at midlife, that 58% of the subjects have moderate to high level of stress and 26% of subjects have low to moderate level of stress whereas,16% of the subjects have shown low psycho social stress. The second component of scale that measured the life event scores showed low score in most of the cases. Therefore the psychosocial stress present in these women was not due to any major life event occurred in last one year.
