Abstract : Metacognition is a powerful tool for thinking which involves awareness, understanding and interpreting the world around individual. Metacognition, an awareness of one’s own cognitive processes in learning, is a crucial component of self-regulatory behavior that facilitates successful learning. Metacognitive awareness is about being aware of what individual knows, controlling own mental processes, taking over the responsibility of learning, realizing own learning strategies, and planning, evaluating and using own learning and strategies. The objectives of the present study were to determine the Metacognitive Awareness of prospective teachers and to find out the significant difference if any in Metacognitive awareness with respect to streams of discipline. The tools used for the study was Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) prepared and standardized by Schraw, G., & Dennison, R. S. (1994). The tool was administered among 81prospective teachers at secondary level. The results show that the mean value of the scores on Metacognitive Awareness of secondary level prospective teachers (39.12) is greater than the 50% (26) of the maximum score and there is significant difference in Metacognitive Awareness of secondary level prospective teachers with respect to streams of discipline.
