Article : IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING PRACTICUM IN ENHANCING PRACTITIONER’S TEACHING SKILLS

Abstract : This paper addresses the issues of the importance of Teaching Practicum as a core component of the curriculum in pre-service teacher education program and its contribution in equipping student teachers with the pedagogical knowledge and skills required for their profession as teachers in the future. The student teaching experience is considered as one of the most important phases of a teacher#34sigs professional preparation. It is the time when the student teacher begins to build the bridge between theory and practice. This study will focus on the role of the student teacher who is to be a responsible, active participant in the student teaching practicum. The results indicated that some difficulties may arise concerning classroom management, teaching large multilevel classes, time management. The findings showed that the future teachers learned new things, their idealistic view on teaching shifted to more pragmatic one. A great number of the future teachers found teaching was the profession they wanted to pursue. They also learned a lot from their cooperating teachers
