Article : GENDER EQUALITY, SINGLE SEX SCHOOLS AND COEDUCATION: WHAT RESEARCH TELLS US

Abstract : Many studies have compared the relative merits of single sex schools and coeducation from varying stand points; with gender equality being one of the key focus area. However, due to mixed findings and inconclusive evidence, the debate continues. This paper reviews previous findings and arguments and seeks to present the relative merits of single sex and coeducation in four specific areas, namely, academic attainment, subject choice, development of self concepts and long term outcomes. In conclusion, it argues that while single sex schooling may be a matter of preference in some countries, in India, given the socio-cultural milieu, they are imperative for promoting the schooling of girl child. However, at the same time, single sex schools are not an alternative to mixed schools and cannot be built as a substitute to the need of promoting girl
