Abstract : Education is a unique investment in the present and the future. Language forms the basis for any educational endeavor. Mastering of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing Skills is essential for an individual for proper induction to the educational process and academic achievement. English occupies an important place in India. It has been given the status of the foreign language of the country. It is the language that continues to dominate educational system and life of our country. The skills of Language learning are mainly divided into two categories: (i) Skills of Comprehension and (ii) Skills of Expression. Reading comprehension implies reading with proper understanding and be able to interpret rightly. The present study is belonging to Normative Survey method of research. The questionnaire consists of two pats namely personal information schedule and Exercises for the checking the comprehension of the students. Sample of the study consist of 200 students studying in class XI from various government schools in Pondicherry. The study concludes that there is no significant relationship exists between pre-school learning and reading comprehension in English of XI standard students and there is no significant caste different exists in reading comprehension(Academic Achievement) in English. More support must be provided by the teachers especially for the first generation learners. Library utilization must be encouraged among lower socio-economic status to improve their reading comprehension.
