Abstract : The aim of this study is to highlight the assessment process in teaching English as a foreign language. Numerous political, social, and economic changes, development of science and technology require constant changes in the educational system to help this system adapted to the needs of the time. Recently, student achievement assessment has drawn attention of teachers, researchers, and educational systems. This attention sets assessment as an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers are facing new tasks, not only related to teaching, but also to the assessment process to promote student’s motivation. Current assessment practices should reflect changes based on learning theories, new curricula, new knowledge, and skills necessary for the 21st century. “In this aspect the assessment of student achievement is changing because students are facing a reality that requires new knowledge, skills, and attitude.“ (Segers et al 2003). Students, in this constant change context need to not only develop deep understanding of the different disciplines, but also develop the ability to analyze, synthesize, release conclusions, and think critically to solve problems they encounter. To help students develop knowledge, skills and attitudes are required changes in the assessment process at school and classroom level. This literature review will help teachers to adopt to their assessment practices to adopt in the changes in education system.
