Through a qualitative analysis of key characters and situations in "Catch-22," this research examines instances and patterns of dark humor employed by soldiers. Utilizing thematic analysis, the study identifies and elucidates the mechanisms through which dark humor operates as a coping strategy in the face of the absurdities and traumas of warfare. The analysis reveals that dark humor in "Catch-22" serves as a multifaceted coping mechanism for soldiers, enabling them to confront the irrationality and harsh realities of war. It emerges as a tool for asserting control, fostering camaraderie, and cultivating resilience amidst the chaos and despair of their circumstances. The study identifies instances where dark humor functions as a defense mechanism, providing a sense of empowerment and agency in situations marked by powerlessness. In conclusion, the research underscores the profound role played by dark humor as a coping mechanism in the lives of soldiers. It highlights its therapeutic potential in enabling individuals to navigate trauma and adversity, fostering resilience and group cohesion.
