Article : ATTITUDE OF MANAGEMENT STUDENTS TOWARDS PSYCHOLOGY AND MENTAL HEALTH - A FOCUS GROUP STUDY

Abstract : The aim of the study was to understand the attitude of management students towards psychology as a discipline - their views about it and its impact on their lives as growing professionals. It also aimed to capture their understanding of the need to maintain positive mental health and seek professional help if/when required, either for personal issues or professional. Purposive sampling was used to obtain a sample of 11 students of the first year Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program at Christ University. Data was collected using a focus group interview and thematically analyzed. The study revealed that students acknowledge the importance of psychology in understanding and facilitating communication, motivation and self-awareness - crucial aspects of managing people. However, despite completing a course on Organizational Behavior, difficulties in the appropriate application of psychological theories and tools were expressed.
